The 70’s were a time. So I’m told. My father enjoyed his college extra-curriculars and putting together the party hotspots was one of them. Recently two of his old 8-Track mixes come up during house cleaning and I’ve reassembled the track playlists. Judging by the track release dates it was pre-Magic Johnson winning the 78-79 National Championship at Michigan State. They might even pre-date legendary coach Jud Heathcote himself (Gus Ganakas coached until 1976). Dad loves sharing the stories of his events, the top flight guests, and his music favorites. I remember him singing “Takin’ Care of Business” in my youth (and “Working at the Carwash”….oddly omitted) and discussing Simon & Garfunkel and The Doobie Brothers. While not a “Top Hits” for the Nerd (I guess the Temptations weren’t party material), a sample of the top early 70’s hits that he had spinning at the campus hotspots. Ranked “A” through “D” based on popularity and audience reception (based on a large sample size according the legend) I think I’ve appropriately named these two lists after thoroughly sorting though many options (“I Herd Her Standing There, Herding Nerds, Too Nerd to Herd, Thou Shall Herd, Herding on the Dance Floor). Vols 1 &2 of the Nerds Herds 8-Track tapes. Love you Dad. Your music selections are a B.
