With Miami making a move for Terry Rozier, Pascal Siakam shipped to the Pacers, and OG Anunoby to the Knicks, the actual NBA trade deadline didn’t have many high-impact moves. The Bulls, Hawks, Lakers, and Warriors stood pat despite trade rumors. No more star talents were moved at the deadline. The transactions were pretty ho-hum.
Boston flipped two far-out future 2nd round picks for Xavier Tillman from the Grizzlies. Tillman’s expiring provides depth for the Celtics during this season’s Championship run for minimal investment. When the Grizz are healthy he isn’t part of the rotation and wouldn’t be re-signed.
Boston also picked up 21-year-old Jaden Springer for a 2nd rounder from the 76ers. He’ll go from the end of one bench to another.
76ers and Bucks trade offense and defense as Pat Beverly moves to the Bucks and Cameron Payne and a 2027 2nd go to Philly.
Detroit flipped Monte Morris to the Timberwolves for a 2023 2nd, Troy Brown Jr, and Shake Milton. This really just seems like an exchanging of parts. Morris’s shooting numbers have crashed this season.
Detroit then flipped a 2nd and former Knicks 1st rounder Kevin Knox to the Jazz for Simone Fontecchio. Simone is a 28-year-old foreign prospect in his 1st season. He will get more run time as a prospect with the Pistons. Kevin Knox might be done.
Detroit also picked up Dauel House Jr’s contract for the 76ers for and a 2024 2nd and a 2028 2nd in exchange. (Pistons also cut Joe Harris and Killian Hayes after the deadline for 26+million in dead cap)
Detroit also tossed Alec Burks and Bojan Bogdanovic’s contracts to the Knicks for a plethora of guys. Bojan will give the Knicks depth. Quentin Grimes and two future 2nds are the highlights that will give the Pistons some player potential.
Utah picked up Kelly Olynk and Ochai Agbaji in exchange for Otto Porter Jr, Kira Lewis Jr, and a 2024 1st. Olynk still seems to be the highest quality player, despite a 8-10 year age gap between himself and Agbaji/Lewis.
The Warriors sent a 2024 2nd to the Pacers for seldom used Cory Joseph and a 2025 2nd. The Warriors now have another ball handler to provide depth behind Steph.
Washington flips a decent young wing in Daniel Gafford to the Mavs for Richaun Holmes and a 2024 1st. Gafford can provide good backcourt depth for the Mavs and the dumpster Wizards can restart with a youngster in this year’s draft.
The Raptors picked up Spencer Dinwiddie from the Nets (and then wavied him-he signed with the Lakers) after a horrible shooting season so far with Brooklyn. The Raptors move off Dennis Schroder and Thaddeus Young’s contracts and, for now, give the Nets a little boost.
Robin Lopez could be seen on the sidelines of the Bucks game reading a book after he was moved to the Kings to clear cap.
The Suns, Grizzlies, and Nets were in a 3-team trade with….very few highlights. Royce O’Neale might give Phoenix more shooting moving from the Grizzlies. Picks and bench players were back to the Grizz and Nets.
PJ Washington and two 2nd rounders went to the Mavs while a 2027 1st, Grant Williams, and Seth Curry went to the Hornets. Williams wore out his welcome in Dallas per reports and Curry is a Charlotte native. PJ with size and athleticism might improve in a better situation with the Mavs.
The 76ers grab Buddy Hield in a 3-team move that really just shuffles 2nd round picks between the Pacers and Spurs. Really a huge get for the 76ers. Another shooter off the bench.
Finally, Gordon Hayward will fight for minutes and bring some veteran leadership to the Thunder. OKC ships the end of the bench and two 2nd rounders for the Hornets vet.
The biggest contributors figure to be Royce O’Neale in Phoenix, PJ Washington with Dallas, and Hield with the 76ers. All players added to teams hoping to do damage in the playoffs. The Mavericks makeover will be the most interesting to see playout.
