One of the best vocalists in music today continues to fly under-the-radar. Carli Fletcher, 26 year-old New Jersey native, first appeared in the public eye as an X Factor contestant in 2011. She later recorded independently in Nashville before relocating to Los Angeles and signing with Capital records in 2018. The past couple years she has started filling out her short, but stellar catalog. She’s also a member and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and actively supports LGBTQ+ and women empowerment movements and programs with her platform.
Her first single, War Paint, was released in 2013 and she’s peppered in single releases between her EP releases Finding Fletcher in 2016, and You Ruined New York City For Me in 2019. Her new project, The S(ex) Tapes is due for release in the next few weeks in September 2020. Fletcher formerly dated YouTuber Shannon Beveridge and it’s been notes she was an influence in the writing of the upcoming The S(ex) Tapes EP. Shannon was also the videographer of the music video for If I Hated You, the lead single off the EP. Using her ex to film makes for a creative, (and obviously) raw, and very real take on the lyrical and visual content.
Undrunk off of You Ruined New York City For Me was Fletcher’s first song that charted on Billboard. The notable lyrics:
I start touching myself to the photos that you used to send me
I should have deleted, but kept it a secret
Is that crazy to do?
So I squeeze out the lime on the ice of my drink
And the juice hits the cuts on my fingers
It still doesn’t burn as much as the thought of you
Are an excellent display of the imagery Fletcher is able to display with some of her writing. The opening of her single Bitter, also ignites very relatable circumstances and help pull the listener in to the rest of the song:
It’s like
Bein’ on the outside of an inside joke
It’s like
When they only got Pepsi and you really want Coke
It’s like
You finally get a text back and it’s just your mom
It’s like
When you just broke up and they play your song
Fletcher starting taking vocal lessons at a young age and her vocal strength shows. She has amazing control of her voice and great range. She has honed her breathing, ability to switch from chest to head and has good diction. Her vocal abilities show in her live performances during the iHeart Radio Jingle Ball 2019 and really shine on her Tonight Show performance with Jimmy Fallen. You can here every word of the song enunciated and full volume of her voice during the performance. Joining the quarantine line-stream tread, Fletcher also performed a live-steamed event sponsored by Bud Light on Instagram in 2020. She was originally scheduled to open for another phenomenal singer, Lewis Capaldi and headliner Niall Horan, but the tour was cancelled due to the coronavirus.
Fletcher’s musical talents far outshine those of established artists already catching major airwaves. Her powerful voice, and the imagery and relativity in her lyrics, should make her a star. We should hopefully see soon, starting with her new EP right around the corner.
